Novelista inglesa de origen australiano. En 1888, abandonó Australia para seguir estudios musicales en Alemania, y pasó el resto de su vida en el extranjero. En 1904 se instaló definitivamente en Inglaterra junto con su marido, J.G. Robertson. Maurice Guest (1908), su antirromántica primera novela, trata sobre el desastroso romance de un estudiante de música. Su obra maestra, The Fortunes of Richard Mahony [Las aventuras de Richard Mahony], 3 vol. (1917–29), describe la vida y el trabajo de un inmigrante australiano en las minas de oro y ofrece un convincente estudio de carácter. Es considerada la obra cumbre de la narrativa australiana de su tiempo.
